You cannot sex a hatchling by looking at it. Pet-store turtles under 4 inches are guesses, whatever the label says. The differences appear as the animal matures, from about 4 inches of shell in sliders and painted turtles, two to five years in most species. Until then, treat the question as open.
Why it matters
A female lays eggs without a male. A female slider or box turtle with nowhere to dig will hold them, and egg binding is a vet emergency that shows up as straining, restlessness, a swollen belly and not eating. Females also grow bigger: an adult female slider averages 10 to 12 inches of shell to a male’s 7 to 9, and the tank you buy is sized to the bigger number. Males are smaller and pushier, and two of them cannot share a tank.
Four signs, aquatic turtles
| Sign | Male | Female |
|---|---|---|
| Front claws | Long, often as long as the toes | Short |
| Tail | Long and thick at the base | Short and thin |
| Vent | Well past the shell edge | At or inside the shell edge |
| Plastron | Slightly concave | Flat |
The claws are the quickest check in sliders, painted and map turtles. Turn the turtle gently toward you and compare the front claws with the back ones. A male’s front claws grow long because he fans them in front of the female’s face in courtship. The tail is the most reliable check across all species: hold the turtle with the tail hanging and look at where the vent sits. Past the rim of the shell means male. The concave plastron is subtle in aquatic turtles and obvious in tortoises.
Box turtles
Look at the eyes. Veterinary sources give red irises for males and yellow-brown for females in eastern box turtles. Males also have the concave plastron, the longer tail and the vent further out. The eye colour fails in some populations and in three-toed box turtles, so confirm with the tail.
Tortoises and plastrons
Tail and plastron. A male tortoise has a long tail he tucks to one side and a plastron with a clear dip in the middle so he can mount. Females have a short tail and a flat plastron. Hermann’s and Greek males also have a longer, more curved rear end of the plastron, and sulcata males grow a thickened front edge. Size is unreliable in tortoises: sulcata males outgrow females, Russian females outgrow males.
Musk and mud turtles
Males have the long tail with a horny tip, and rough patches of raised scales on the inside of the back legs. Females have a stub of a tail. Claws tell you nothing in these species.
What changes with age
An older male slider goes dark. The red ear stripe fades and the shell and skin turn grey or black, so a mature black slider is almost always a male. Tails and claws keep growing, so a turtle that looked female at 4 inches can reveal itself at 6. Re-check once a year until you are sure.
Hatchlings are a coin toss
In sliders, painted turtles, map turtles and most tortoises the sex of a hatchling is set by the temperature of the nest, not by its genes. Breeders who incubate at a chosen temperature can produce mostly one sex, and some sell hatchlings as females on that basis. Treat it as a probability, not a promise, and check for yourself at 4 inches.
If you still cannot tell
A reptile vet can confirm the sex at a routine visit, and in hard cases with an ultrasound or a short endoscopic look at the gonads under sedation. Ask when the turtle is in for its annual check anyway. If you have a confirmed female, add a nesting box, 10 inches deep of damp sand and soil, to any enclosure, whether or not there has ever been a male.
What helps
A 75-gallon glass aquarium or a 100-gallon stock tank, because the female you may have will need it. Coconut coir substrate makes the nesting box. A cuttlebone in the tank gives a laying female the calcium the eggs take out of her. The vet directory lists reptile vets by state.
